Receiver Young finds better fit with UW

Molly Yanity Seattle Post-Intelligencer

SEATTLE – Former O’Dea High (Seattle) All-American Chancellor Young said he had a hard time finding some of his classes Wednesday as the academic quarter began at the University of Washington.

But from the smile on his face, it sure looked as if Young had found familiar ground.

Young officially joined the Huskies football team as a scholarship player. He began practicing with the team, but will sit out this season as mandated by NCAA transfer rules. He will have three years of eligibility.

Young spent his freshman year at Duke, where he caught two passes for 15 yards as a wide receiver. He chose Duke over UCLA and Oregon.

“It just wasn’t a fit for me,” Young said. “It’s a fantastic program and Coach (Ted) Roof is great and has been a wonderful person to me as both a person and a football player, but it just wasn’t a fit for me. I needed to be back over in Washington.”

Young has football in his blood. His father starred at USC before a 13-year NFL career. His older brother Charles played football at Stanford under current Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham, a fact that was not lost on Young.

Notes

Coach Ty Willingham said Thursday there is nothing new on the injury front, meaning that left tackle Joe Toledo (ankle) and cornerback Matt Fountaine (sternum, shoulder) remain questionable and day-to-day. … Defensive tackle Jordan White-Frisbee, who has been out all season with a broken foot, may be close to calling it a year. Willingham said it’s getting to the point at which a redshirt decisions must be made.
