WSU splits pair with No. 14 ASU

Jared Prince threw six-plus strong innings to improve to 4-0 on the season, and Paul Gran and Simi Reynolds each had three hits as Washington State defeated No. 14 Arizona State 6-1 Friday to open a Pac-10 baseball doubleheader in Pullman. The opener picked up in the third inning after a power outage suspended play Thursday night.

In the nightcap, Preston Paramore and Rocky Laguna each had three hits to give the Sun Devils (22-8, 1-1) an 8-3 victory over the Cougars (21-8, 3-2).

“Dustin Colclough hit a hard line drive to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Scott Campbell and give Gonzaga an 8-7 victory over Portland (10-15) in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams at Avista Stadium.

Campbell, Darin Holcomb (Shadle Park) and Jackson Brennan each had three hits to lead the Bulldogs (18-10). Brennan hit two homers, giving him nine for the season.

“Washington ace Tim Lincecum struck out 18 and threw a two-hitter as the Huskies (19-10, 2-2) defeated UCLA 5-0 in a Pac-10 game at Seattle. Lincecum, who had a no-hitter through 51/3 innings, struck out the first seven Bruins (15-12, 0-1) he faced.

Softball

Kelcey Cavan threw a no-hitter and struck out eight as North Idaho routed Colorado Northwestern 11-0 in five innings to open a Scenic West doubleheader in Rangely, Colo.

Melodee Mildenberger threw a one-hitter in the nightcap for the Cardinals (27-9, 15-6), who won 12-0 in five innings. Justine Williams had three extra-base hits and four RBIs for NIC.

“The scheduled NWAACC doubleheader between Community Colleges of Spokane and Walla Walla in Spokane was postponed by rain. The teams will play Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Swimming

Washington State’s Erin McCleave made her second final in as many days at the U.S. National Spring Championships in Federal Way, Wash., finishing 24th in the 400-meter freestyle. She will swim in today’s 1,500 freestyle.

Track and field

Two Washington State Cougars earned event wins in the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif. Jessica Zita won the women’s B section shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 21/2 inches, while Justin Ireland won the men’s B 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 49.13 seconds. Jill Semenza, Gonzaga’s only entry, finished 18th in the 10,000 in 36:15.27.

Eastern signs TV deal

Eastern Washington University reached a principle agreement with Belo Media Group Spokane to televise a limited amount of Eagles football and men’s basketball games the next two seasons on KSKN Channel 22.
