Many events fill upcoming Holy Week

Churches following the Western calendar are celebrating Holy Week, with many hosting special services for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Holy Friday. The week observes the final days of Jesus’ life before his resurrection.

• Opportunity Christian Church will host a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. Thursday. The church is at 708 N. Pines Road.

• A Maundy Thursday service will begin at 7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 13008 E. Broadway.

• Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will offer a Good Friday worship service at 7 p.m. The church is at 2511 S. Pines Road.

• The Veradale United Church of Christ will have a special Palm Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. There will be special music during the service. An egg hunt for all children will follow.

The church, at 611 N. Progress Road, will also have a Maundy Thursday service and meal of soup and bread at 6:30 p.m. Call 926-7173 for more information.

• The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection will host a Maundy Thursday service with traditional foot washing at 7 p.m. A healing service will begin at 7 p.m. on Good Friday. The church is at 15319 E. Eighth Ave.

• St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church will host a tri-parish Stations of the Cross at noon on Good Friday. The tri-parish group also includes the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. St. Mary’s is at 304 S. Adams Road.

• Zion Lutheran Church will host a special interfaith Holy Tuesday service with the congregation of St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church at 7 p.m. The service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. The choirs of both churches will perform during the service.

Zion, located at 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will also host services at 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. There will also be a meditation of the cross at 12:10 p.m. on Holy Friday.

• Spokane Valley United Methodist Church, 115 N. Raymond Road, will host a Hallelujah Party for children from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The festivities will include an egg hunt and donkey for pictures. The church will host a special time for reflection on Holy Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. People will be welcome to come and go at any time.

There also will be prayer time at the church on Good Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A formal worship service with drama and a performance by the choir will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Good Friday.

• Berean Bible Church will host a Good Friday Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. Child care will be available for infants and toddlers. The church is at 10910 E. Boone Ave.

• Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 810 S. Sullivan Road, will have a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. It will be preceded by a soup supper at 6. There will also be a Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. on Good Friday.

• Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will host a Palm Sunday breakfast from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The cost is $5 per person; children under 6 are free. Proceeds will be used for a youth mission trip in June.

The church will host an intergenerational service with the youth at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Additional services will be 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

• Foothills Community Church, 11102 N. Forker Road, will celebrate Good Friday with a worship service at 7:30 p.m.

• Peace Lutheran Church’s Palm Sunday service at 9:30 a.m. will begin with a processional into the sanctuary. The church, 4124 N. Harvard Road, will have a Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.

• Opportunity Presbyterian Church will begin its Holy Week celebration with a soup supper at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by a Maundy Thursday service at 7. The church, at 202 N. Pines Road, will also host a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

The Passion

Valley Assembly of God will put on several performances of the drama “The Passion” during Holy Week. More than 80 actors and singers will re-enact the story of Jesus’ last week of life. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. next Saturday and Easter Sunday. Admission is free. The church is located at 15618 E. Broadway Ave.

Violin concert

Violinist Jaime Jorge will perform in concert at 11 a.m. today at the Spokane Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1601 S. Sullivan Road. The Cuban-born musician has performed at churches around the world.
