Pirates top Willamette

Steve Hare threw a three-hitter to lead Whitworth to a 3-1 victory over Willamette (14-16, 9-12) in a Northwest Conference baseball game Sunday in Salem, Ore.

Hare struck out six for the Pirates (16-13, 10-5) and allowed Willamette’s only run on a Kyle Stalker home run in the second inning.

Caleb Reaber hit a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning to give Whitworth the lead.

•Josh Roenicke drove in four runs to lead UCLA to a 10-7 victory over Washington State in a Pac-10 game in Los Angeles.

UCLA (18-14, 3-2) rallied from an early 4-0 deficit and held off a late WSU rally in the ninth inning

Jeff Miller had four hits for the Cougars (22-12, 4-5), including a bases-loaded, two-run single in the seventh.

•J.J. Sferra hit an RBI single through a drawn-in infield to give No. 13 Arizona State an 8-7 victory over Washington in an 11-inning Pac-10 game in Tempe, Ariz.

•Sean Heary hit two doubles, and Jameson Lange and Brian Parker also had two hits apiece as Big Bend defeated Community Colleges of Spokane 6-1 to open a NWAACC doubleheader in Moses Lake.

The first-place Vikings also won the nightcap, holding on for a 4-3 victory. Shawn Gizynski had three hits for the Sasquatch, and left-hander Jordan Moore (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) threw six shutout innings in relief.

•Sunday’s West Coast Conference game between Gonzaga and Santa Clara was postponed due to unplayable field conditions after a heavy downpour Saturday.

The three-game series is set to continue today at noon. If the Avista Stadium field is still unplayable, the game will be moved to Spokane Falls Community College.

Softball

Whitworth moved into first place in the Northwest Conference standings for the first time in program history with a doubleheader sweep of Puget Sound at Marks Field.

Heather Case hit a two-run homer in the third inning and the Pirates held on for a 3-2 victory in the opener. Stephanie Helbling (Moscow High) had a pair of hits for Whitworth.

Jennifer Eckhoff threw a five-hit shutout to lead the Pirates (18-8, 13-3) to a 3-0 victory and complete the first series sweep of the Loggers (16-10, 6-8) in program history.

Rowing

The Gonzaga women’s varsity 8+ overcame a slow start to finish second in the Grand Final of the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J.

Massachusetts won the 2,000-meter event in 7 minutes, 7.5 seconds, followed by Gonzaga in 7:10.8. Host Villanova finished third in 7:18.7.
