Centennial celebration

Trinity United Methodist Church, 1725 E. Bridgeport Ave., grew from three Methodist churches in the Hillyard neighborhood. On Sunday, it will celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of those churches, Hays Park Methodist Episcopal Church, which was established March 1, 1906.

The Rev. Joey Olson will lead the 10:30 a.m. worship service, and there will be a potluck luncheon following the service. For more information, call 483-2361.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th Ave., is joining Jews everywhere on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremburg, Germany. In recognition of this, “Let There Be Light Again: Sixty Years After Nuremburg” will tell the story of the Holocaust and discuss the many atrocities inflicted upon other human beings in today’s world.

George Critchlow, an associate professor at Gonzaga School of Law and founding member and former director of the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, will speak.

Japan Week celebration

In conjunction with Japan Week, the Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., is offering a food bazaar and special services and lectures this weekend.

The bazaar today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will include a chicken teriyaki boxed lunch for $8.50, senbei, and a bake sale. There will also be a lecture, “The Influence of Japanese Culture on Buddhist Thought,” tonight at 7. The Rev. Gregory Gibbs of the Oregon Buddhist Temple will speak.

A Hanamatsuri, or Flower Festival, service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. will celebrate the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who would grow up to become the Buddha.

Orthodox Easter

Christ the Savior Orthodox Christian Church, 12407 E. 16th Ave., is celebrating Easter according to the Orthodox calendar.

Today’s services will include the Vesperal Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. and Great and Holy Pascha at 11 p.m. A festive meal will follow the late service.

Sunday’s Orthodox Easter service at 1 p.m. will include Agape Vespers with readings of the gospel in many languages.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., offers services beginning today at 9:30 a.m. with the Vesperal Divine Liturgy. There also will be an 11 p.m. vigil and 11:45 p.m. Resurrection service.

Orthodox Easter will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Sunday with Agape Vespers, which will be read in many languages.

Fundraising auction

St. Michael’s Academy, 8500 N. St. Michael’s Road, is presenting its 10th annual auction April 29.

A preview of auction items begins at 4 p.m., followed by dinner and oral auction. Items up for bid include 32 tons of gravel, dinner and dessert for 50 guests, $500 and $1,000 orthodontics certificates, La-Z-Boy recliners, area rugs, a trip to Reno, Nev., a whitewater trip in Wyoming, beauty baskets, craft baskets, hotel stays and restaurant certificates.

Documentary screening

The Christian Youth Theater-Spokane, 708 W. Nora Ave., is holding a free screening of the documentary “Invisible Children” today at 7 p.m.

The film explains the plight of children in Northern Uganda who are kidnapped from their homes and forced into military service. Invisible Children Inc. is an organization that helps the people of Northern Uganda and helps to put more than 300 children through school.

Shalom Book Club

The Shalom Book Club at Lutheran Book Parlor, 1414 W. Broadway Ave., will discuss chapters 5 through 7 of “Restoring At-Risk Communities II” by the Rev. John Perkins on Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

40th anniversary celebration

Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., is celebrating 40 years of worship Sunday during its 10 a.m. service.

Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th Ave., is presenting its annual Trading Post Sale today from 8 a.m. to noon.

First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., is offering its annual Colossal Book Sale on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Singles groups

Spokane Christian Singles is presenting speed dating today at 6 p.m. for those in their 20s, 30s and 40s at Frontier West Restaurant, 2121 N. Division St.

The group also will offer a session for those older than 45 at 3 p.m. Sunday, also at Frontier West. The cost is $10 for the first session and $7 for any session after that.
