Boiled waters can wash bugs away

Gary Dymski (c) 2006, Newsday

Try this nontoxic remedy for dealing with insects this spring, especially ants:

I found a huge, huge ant colony in the crack between my driveway and garage floor last week.

Normally, this would be upsetting, since I didn’t have a household pesticide available.

I hate using toxic products, but once in a while, when bugs seem overwhelming, I confess to using a squirt or two from a spray bottle.

This time, however, I simply boiled two large pots of water on the range top. Minutes later, I poured the water slowly into the openings of several ant hills along the crack between the asphalt drive and the concrete garage floor.

I repeated the boiling water routine two or three times over the next couple of days.

Ants gone.
