UI basketball adds player

Texas high school star O.J. Avworo has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Idaho.

Avworo is a 6-0, 180-pound point guard from Houston. where he is a senior at Alief Elsik High School. Avworo averaged 10.8 points, 11.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game as a senior and was an honorable mention all-State selection.

Avworo reportedly also received interest from Stanford, Rice, Colorado State, SMU and Charlotte.

Baseball

Travis Coulter and Jared Prince each had three hits to lead Washington State to a 9-6 win over Gonzaga (26-16) at Avista Stadium. Coulter and Greg Lagreid each had two-run singles in the Cougars’ (27-15) four-run fifth inning, which turned out to be the game’s decisive runs. WSU’s win evened the season series between the two schools at three apiece.

“Jon Buettner had two hits, a grand slam and a two-run double, to lead Lewis-Clark State (36-3) in a 16-7 non-conference win over Whitworth (18-18) in Lewiston. Van Lierman and Nick Froman each had three hits for the Pirates.

Golf

Washington State’s Anastasia Kostina fired a 3-over-par second-round score of 75 and dropped into a tie for seventh place at the women’s Pacific-10 Championship in Tucson, Ariz. UCLA leads the tournament, which concludes today, with a total of 578. The Cougars are ninth at 615. Washington is sixth at 608.

“Washington is at 6-over-par 361 after the third day of the Pacific-10 Championship in Palm Desert, Calif., placing them in second place, six strokes behind leader UCLA. The Huskies have three golfers in the top-10, led by Erik Olson who is tied for third place at 2 under par. Washington State is ninth at 373 at the Big Horn Country Club.
