RiverHawks take WCCBL title with win
BELLINGHAM – The Spokane RiverHawks needed a win and a Wenatchee loss to clinch the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League regular-season title, and that’s just what they got.
Spokane took advantage of five Bellingham errors, scoring five unearned runs in a 9-2 victory Saturday night.
Spokane’s Carl Uhl went 2 for 5 and had two runs batted in. Greg Biagi and Chase Powell added two hits and one RBI apiece for Spokane.
Starting pitcher Cory Powell went eight strong innings for Spokane, allowing only five hits and striking out seven.
A.J. Proszek came on and pitched a scoreless ninth.
Spokane (28-13) clinched the title after Wenatchee lost to Aloha 10-5. Both of those teams are 25-15 heading into a doubleheader today.
Spokane closes the regular season today at Bellingham.
The best-of-3 playoffs begin Tuesday at the league’s second-place team. Spokane will host the second and, if necessary, third games.
