Taurasi scores record 47
Diana Taurasi scored a WNBA record 47 points Thursday night to lead the visiting Phoenix Mercury to a 111-110 triple-overtime win over the Houston Comets in the highest-scoring game in league history.
Taurasi broke Katie Smith’s record of 46 points that she set in 2001 against the Los Angeles Sparks while playing for Minnesota. Taurasi wasn’t around for the end as she fouled out with 2:45 left in the second overtime, 35 seconds after she broke the mark.
Shock 82, Sky 48: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Deanna Nolan scored 22 points and Kara Braxton added a double-double as Detroit cruised to the easy victory despite losing All-Star Cheryl Ford to a sprained left hand midway through the first quarter.
Silver Stars 75, Storm 65: At San Antonio, La Toya Thomas scored 16 points to help the Silver Stars beat the Storm, who rested All-Star center Lauren Jackson.
Seattle (18-15) already has earned a playoff spot, but the Storm will have to defeat Houston in their regular-season finale Saturday to hold down the third spot.
Monarchs 74, Lynx 66: At Sacramento, Calif., Yolanda Griffith scored 18 points to help Sacramento beat Minnesota despite Seimone Augustus’ 31 points.
