LDS centennial

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is celebrating a century in Spokane today at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St.

The doors open at 4 p.m. for children’s activities, entertainment and more. A special program including guest speakers will begin at 7 in the grandstands, and there will be a dance at 9.

Those attending should bring their own food and water.

Garage sale

Covenant United Methodist Church is holding a garage sale today to benefit its sister church, Buenas Nuevas Lutheran Church in El Paisnal, El Salvador.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 317 E. Silver Pines Court, Spokane. Proceeds will be used for 50 scholarships at the Salvadoran church.

Special services

•The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is celebrating Anglo-Catholic Mass on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The service, held in observation of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be sung by the St. John’s Schola, accompanied by David Asplin assisting organist Janet Satre Ahrend.

Before the service, the cathedral will be open for tours from 1 to 4 p.m.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., is celebrating the Feast of the Dormition of Our Most Holy Lady.

The church is presenting Great Vespers on Monday at 7 p.m., Orthros on Tuesday at 9 a.m., and Divine Liturgy on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

There will also be a Paraklesis to the Theotokos (Mother of God) service Friday at 7 p.m. This service is chanted during the first 14 days of August and also during times of distress or sorrow.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan Ave., is presenting the Rev. John Deckenback, the conference minister of the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Deckenback will preach during the 9:30 a.m. service Sunday.

Church concerts

•Mount Spokane Church, 6311 E. Mount Spokane Park Drive, is presenting Denver and the Mile High Orchestra on Wednesday.

The 15-piece orchestra plays big band music of the 1930s and ‘40s.

The gates of the outdoor amphitheater will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will start at 7. A concession stand will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages chips and soft drinks.

Admission is a suggested $5 donation.

•Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8441 N. Indian Trail Road, is presenting the Cary Fly Band on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The group plays a blend of country, rock and the blues.

The concert will include a visit from the Inland Northwest Blood Bank and Bloodmobile. Audience members are advised to bring a blanket or a chair and their own snacks.

‘World of Islam’

Fourth Memorial Church, 2000 N. Standard St., is offering the 12-week course, “Encountering the World of Islam,” a discussion with evangelical Christians.

Classes will be Sundays Sept. 10 to Dec. 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church. Each will be taught by a different instructor.

Topics will include the history of Islam and Western myths that surround the religion.

Early registration ends Friday; anyone who calls before then will receive a discount on the class tuition and the study book.

Movie night

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2715 S. Ray St., is presenting outdoor movies Thursday and Aug. 24.

Different family-friendly films will be shown each week. The programs will begin at dusk, starting with a cartoon.

Vacation Bible school

•Christian Life Church, 14011 N. Little Spokane Drive, is inviting kids in kindergarten through sixth grade to “Jesus is my Super Hero,” a vacation Bible school Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Kids will hear Bible stories and can enjoy crafts, games, music and snacks.

Metaline Falls (Wash.) Congregational United Church of Christ is presenting “The Whole World in God’s Hands” Tuesday through Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Metaline Park picnic pavilion.

Also, the vacation Bible school is being presented by the Roman Catholic parishes of St. Joseph’s in Metaline Falls and St. Bernard’s in Ione, Wash. Ages 5 through 13 are invited to participate in crafts, games, music, Bible stories and snacks.

Ancient Traditions Community Church, 1928 E. Rich Ave., is presenting an Enneagram personality types class Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
