Sheehan leads rain-delayed International

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Patrick Sheehan piggybacked on Ian Leggatt’s incredible second round to take the lead at the halfway mark of the International golf tournament at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colo.

Seventy-two of the 140 golfers will finish the second round today because Friday’s round was halted by rain.

Sheehan’s five birdies offset his two bogeys and gave him eight points for the day and 18 for the tournament, the only stop on the PGA Tour that uses the modified Stableford scoring system.

Leggatt was just one back after firing a 13. Sergio Garcia scored 10 points to bring his total to 16; and Stewart Cink and Tom Pernice Jr. were tied for fourth with 15 points through holes 12 and 10, respectively.

Scandinavian TPC

Lorena Ochoa broke Annika Sorenstam’s course record by a stroke with an 8-under-par 65 to share the second-round lead with the Swede at the Scandinavian TPC at Stockholm, Sweden.

Sorenstam shot a 2-under 71, picking up her first bogey in the tournament on the 11th hole. She had three birdies.

Canadian Women’s Open

A day after matching the tournament record with an 8-under 64 at London, Ontario, Angela Stanford birdied her first two holes then played the final 16 holes in even par for a 70 to maintain a three-stroke lead.

Cristie Kerr and Jee Young Lee were tied for second after 70s, Canadian star Lorie Kane (70) was another stroke back and Pat Hurst (71) and Vicki Goetze-Ackerman (73) were 4 under on the London Hunt and Country Club course.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., is tied for ninth place at 2 under (70-72–142) and Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, is tied for 31st at 1 over (71-74–145).

U.S. Women’s amateur

Katharina Schallenberg, a one-time bank clerk back home in Germany, upset Duke’s Jennie Lee to advance to the semifinal round of the U.S. Women’s amateur at North Plains, Ore.

In today’s semifinals, Schallenberg will face Stacy Lewis, who beat 16-year-old Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu, 6 and 4.

In the other semifinal, Hawaii’s Kimberly Kim will face 15-year-old Lindy Duncan. Kim, 14, defeated Colombian Eileen Vargas, 3 and 1.
