White Sox 5, Royals 4: At Chicago, closer Bobby Jenks got Mike Sweeney to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded, and Chicago held its wild-card lead by holding off Kansas City. For the first time in major league history, both teams hit leadoff home runs in the first two innings.

Indians 3, Twins 2: At Minneapolis, Paul Byrd pitched his first complete game in more than a year, scattering seven hits to lead Cleveland over Minnesota. Minnesota fell to two games behind the front-running White Sox in the race for the wild card.

Orioles 12, Yankees 2: At New York, Brian Roberts led off the game with a home run, and Nick Markakis and Fernando Tatis also connected to lead Baltimore to a victory over New York.

Tigers 4 , Rangers 2: At Detroit, Kenny Rogers pitched five-plus innings, striking out one and walking four, to pick up his first win since July 5 and Carlos Guillen homered to lift Detroit over Texas. Ivan Rodriguez also had three hits for the Tigers.

Blue Jays 6, Devil Rays 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Bengie Molina hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer during a four-run eighth inning and came within a double of hitting for the cycle, lifting Toronto over Tampa Bay.
