Furrer wins at International Championships
Spokane’s Amanda Furrer, already considered one of the top junior shooters in the country, continued to showcase her rifle skills overseas, this time at the Great Britain Junior International Championships, held Aug. 7-10 at Bisley Shooting Grounds in Bisley, England.
Furrer took first place with a score of 667.9 in the 50-meter Three-Position event. She won second place in the 10-meter Air-Rifle event with a score of 487.3. She also was second place in the 10-meter Air Three-Position Mixed event with a score of 690.3.
Furrer’s last individual medal came in the 50-meter Rifle-Prone .22 event, where she scored a 584 to take third.
Furrer and the rest of Team USA were also impressive. The team won gold medals in the Three-Position, 10-meter Air-Rifle, 10-meter Air Three-Position and the 50-meter Prone events.
Furrer won five gold medals, two silver and one bronze.
Baseball
The Class of 2008 and 2009 Eastern Washington baseball teams had impressive showings at the Pacific Northwest Baseball Championships, held Aug. 16-18 in Portland, Ore.
The 2009 Eastern Washington team finished with a record of 3-2 and took 5th place.
The 2008 team finished 4-0 in pool play but lost to Utah 4-3 in the championship game.
Spokane area players on the 2009 team: Tyler Jackson, Trenton Hauff, Billy Moon, Jacob Partridge and Nick Fowler.

Golf
Colbert’s Sierra and Savana Bezdicek finished in the top two in their age divisions at the Frank Rodia Junior Invitational, held Aug. 14-15 at the Alderbrook Golf and Yacht Club in Union, Wash.
Sierra placed first in the 8-11 division with a 36-hole total of 181. Savana took second place in the 12-13 division with a 171.
Miscellany
Six Spokane area youth completed the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon on Aug. 12 and medaled in their age divisions. Spokane’s Skyler Tidd, 15, won first place in the boys 15 and under division with a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes and 22 seconds. Brett Busch, 12, from Liberty Lake, took second place with a time of 3:12:24. In the Girls 15-U division, Liberty Lake’s Josie Warner, 13, took first place with a time of 3:12:25.
In the boys 16-19 age division, Eric Gavelin, 16, of Spokane, took first place with a time of 2:19:47, while Spokane’s Erin Wischmann, 16, came in second with a time of 2:26:26. Coeur d’Alene’s Julie Bennett, 17, took third in the girls 16-19 division with a time of 3:45:36.
The triathlon consisted of a 1.5-kilometer swim in Lake Coeur d’Alene, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run.
