Nikiko Johnson learned that perfect attendance can unlock doors.

The Mt. Spokane High School graduate won a new 2006 Hyundai Tiburon from Hallmark Hyundai in the dealership’s “It’s Cool to Stay in School” scholarship program.

Johnson was one of 69 students from about 40 area high schools who didn’t miss a day of class during her senior year and entered the contest. Johnson’s name was picked at a June drawing at a Spokane Indians game.

Nikiko is planning to attend Spokane Falls Community College in the fall.

“When we discussed who should win our scholarship, we made a list of qualities we would like to reward,” said Denny Waltermire, president of Hallmark Hyundai and co-organizer of the project.

“And motivated learner was on the top of our list. From there, we decided that perfect attendance during the senior year would demonstrate motivation.”

The dealership is planning to hold the same contest this school year.

Participating schools must provide the dealership with the names of the eligible students. Students or parents interested in participating should contact their high school to ensure their school is signed up.

Winners can choose a $20,000 scholarship instead of the car.
