Blogwatch: It’s not always easy being a sports fan
Sometimes it isn’t easy to be a sports fan – and I’m not talking about when your team loses.
Just finding the right TV station can be a chore.
Take Saturday night for instance. The assignment for the SportsLink blog ( www.spokesmanreview.com/ blogs/sportslink) was to watch the Spokane Shock’s ArenaCup championship football game like any fan, and post while it was on.
The game had a 4 p.m. start, and was playing on KAYU. So at 4 p.m., I was ready with the computer fired up and planted on a TV tray in front of the recliner, the Sony tuned to KAYU. You know, KAYU’s high-definition feed. On Comcast’s channel 103.
Funny thing, the Shock weren’t on. The Yankees-Angels game was. What the heck?
Being the brilliant entertainment maven I am, it only took about 10 minutes – or 25 points in arenafootball2 time – to figure out I needed to change the channel. To channel 3, the regular KAYU feed on Comcast.
And there was the game. Live from Puerto Rico.
But it definitely wasn’t high-def. It wasn’t even low-def. Call it fuzzy-def.
Though that didn’t seem to bother those of you who shared your comments with me during the game. The officiating – which brings up the question: Are Washington teams doomed to be toasted by the officials in pro football title games – the field, the postgame comments, those were things that interested you.
Even though the game was out of reach midway through the second half, the conversation was enjoyable.
Enjoyable enough that we’ll try it again this Saturday with the Cougar game. And there are three things I can guarantee: I’ll get the station right, the picture will be clearer and if you leave me a question or comment, I’ll reply – even if I have to consult a Ouija board.
The outcome? I won’t even hazard a guess.
Kicking off a new season
With high school football kicking off this week in Washington – it started last Friday in Idaho, and SportsLink pointed you to ever story we could find – the SportsLink will take you out to Albi for the opening of the GSL season Thursday – while trying to keep up with Eastern Washington’s opener with Oregon State – and to another game Friday.
Meanwhile, if you want to check up on the high school action, check out the Prep Report ( www.spokesmanreview.com/ blogs/prepreport) and Idaho Prep Sports ( www.spokesmanreview.com/ blogs/idahopreps) blogs. We’ve been previewing the local leagues there, with the Greater Spokane League up today in Washington and the 5A and 4A schools in Idaho.
Saturday will be filled with college football action, with the Vandals joining the Cougs and Huskies in opening their seasons. Between now and then, we’ll link to the best information we can find about the three and, of course, we’ll be following the Cougar telecast on ESPN2.
Plus, if I can get out of the yard work, we’ll be posting Saturday during the early games.
