Warriors select Nelson after axing Montgomery

Coach Mike Montgomery was dismissed by the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday and Don Nelson will step in to take his place. Golden State will re-hire Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history and the last coach to lead the Warriors to the playoffs, today, a source told The Associated Press.

Montgomery reached the Final Four at Stanford and also coached for Montana earlier in his college coaching career.

He never found the same success at the NBA level, going 34-48 in each of the last two seasons.

“The Utah Jazz have signed rookie guard Dee Brown, a second-round draft pick from Illinois. “J.J. Redick’s court appearance to face drunken driving charges in Durham, N.C. was delayed until Oct. 24.

“Seimone Augustus of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx was taken to the hospital after hitting her head on the court while training with the United States women’s world championship team in Durham, N.C. She complained of pain in her neck and received a precautionary CAT scan. She is listed as day-to-day.

“San Jose State women’s coach Janice Richard took a medical leave of absence to undergo chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Basso denies doping

Ivan Basso, who was excluded from the Tour de France after being implicated in a Spanish doping investigation, denied using banned substances in an appearance before Italian anti-doping authorities.

“It is clear that I have never engaged in doping,” Basso said at a two-hour hearing before an Italian Olympic Committee.

Basso was among nine riders – including German veteran Jan Ullrich – ousted from the Tour de France the day before it began.

U.S. team wins again

Second baseman Mark Reynolds hit two home runs and had four RBIs in Havana, Cuba, to propel the United States to a 5-2 win over Puerto Rico as the U.S. improved to 4-0 for the top spot in Pool B of the Americas Olympic Baseball Qualifier.

“Twenty-three blood tests taken earlier this month at the European Athletic Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, turned up “abnormalities,” track and field’s European governing body said.

Names have yet to be released. It has not been determined whether the findings indicate doping.

“Former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace walked away from an accident in Cornelius, N.C. in which a driver talking on her cell phone ran a stop sign and collided with Wallace’s SUV. No one involved in the accident required medical treatment.

“Cat Osterman pitched a three-hitter to lead the United States past Canada 4-0 in the softball world championships in Beijing.

“Miami wide receiver Ryan Moore grabbed a woman by the throat and pushed her to the ground, according to a police report in Coral Gables, Fla.

Moore, a 22-year-old senior from Orlando, Fla., was not arrested after the incident early Saturday but was suspended indefinitely by coach Larry Coker.
