Ex-sprint star Glance will speak

Harvey Glance, a former world record-holding sprinter and a gold medalist in the 1976 Olympics, will be in Spokane Thursday to speak in the Lair Auditorium at Spokane Community College at 6 p.m.

It is free and open to the public.

Glance, the head men’s track coach at the University of Alabama who is considered a strong motivational speaker, will share his experience in the world of track and field and will include important information for athletes who might wish to compete at the collegiate level.

A 16-time All-American and three-time Olympian, Glance held world records at both 100 meters and 100 yards and won a gold medal in the 4x100 relay in the Montreal Games.

Basketball

Central Valley High School is planning an alumni men’s tournament in May and Bears coach Rick Sloan said he is seeking enough former players to have 12 teams.

The plan is to have a four-team bracket for players from the years 1980 and prior, and one of eight teams of graduates from 1981 to the present.

Bowling

Todd Benner parlayed a hot start into his second straight Junior Bowlers Tour victory during November’s stop at Lilac Lanes.

Benner, who compiled a 1,019 series for his first four games, defeated Mike Federico 268-194 in the title match. Federico went into the five-player roll-offs as the No. 1 seed after taking three of four games from Benner in the match-play qualifying round. Benner went in as No. 3.

The two straight tournament wins has given Benner the overall points lead halfway through the JBT season.

Matt Benner finished third, Evan Nash fourth and Mark Shepard fifth.

Brothers Todd and Matt Benner matched high games for the boys with 279s. Amy Buswell was high for the girls with a 212.

The next JBT is the doubles event next Sunday at Players & Spectators.

College scene

Gonzaga University junior men’s soccer forward George Josten was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Far West All-Regional first team.

Josten led the West Coast Conference in goals with 12 and points with 28. It was the second straight year he’s led in both categories.

“Two Whitworth seniors earned recognition on ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America college division teams.

Steve Honeyman, an offensive lineman from Kamiakin in Kennewick, was a second-team selection in football. He has a 3.95 grade-point average as an international business and economics major.

Jael Hagerott, a midfielder from Mead, was a third-team choice in women’s soccer. She has a 3.99 GPA in kinesiology.

“Five athletes from area high schools, three of them from Gonzaga Prep, were honored when the All-Frontier Conference football team was announced.

Earning first-team awards were Carroll College juniors Phil Lenoue, a defensive lineman, and place-kicker Marcus Miller, both from G-Prep.

On the second team were Jimmy Hoffman, an Eastern Oregon senior defensive lineman from Timberlake; Josh Schmidt of Carroll, a senior linebacker from G-Prep; and Brad Hollen, a Montana-Western sophomore punter from Riverside.

Sara Fairburn, a Simpson University sophomore from Northwest Christian, was the California Pacific Conference women’s basketball player of the week last week.

The 6-foot forward scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in each of two games in the Simpson Thanksgiving Tournament. The consistent effort also earned her selection to the all-tournament team.

“Washington State junior Haley Paul was named to the All-Pac-10 second team in women’s cross country.

Shooting

Bryce Purdy of Spokane was the youngest competitor at the National Sporting Clays Association winter championships last month in Reno, Nev., but it’s safe to say he made the most noise.

Purdy, 11, who competes for the Landt Farms Youth Shotgun program, was the youngest by three years in the sub-junior events. He won five of the six events he entered in his class – the 200 target main event, the 5-stand (100 targets), 20 gauge, 28 gauge and 410 – to finish eighth overall among all shooters 16 and younger.

The championships are one of the qualifiers for the NSCA All-America team.

Swimming

Washington State has signed four for its women’s team, coach Erica Quam announced.

Slated to join the Cougars for the 2007-08 school year are Sierra Burton of Carmel, Calif., a freestyler who won nine gold medals and three silvers at the Pacific Swimming Long Course Championships and also established national top-10 times in the 15-16 age division in five different events; and Rugile Mileisyte, a backstroke specialist from Kaunas, Lithuania, who set two national records in the European Championships in 2005.

Also, Erika Roach of San Antonio, a four-time state placer in the butterfly and freestyle; and Talor Whitaker of Chesterton, Ind., a freestyle-individual medley swimmer who has collected four gold medals in state high school championships the last two years.

“University of Idaho has signed four women to national letters of intent, coach Tom Jager announced.

They are Alyson Hamilton of Lake Oswego, Ore., a two-time state champion in the 50 freestyle in high school who comes to Idaho after attending Portland Community College for one year; and Anna Humphrey of Portland, an all-around swimmer.

Also, Elizabeth Jagusch of Ketchikan, Alaska, a two-time state champion in the 100 breaststroke; and Mary Skidmore of Memphis, Tenn., a backstroke specialist who is following her father attending the University of Idaho.

Track and field

Kersee Lind of Hermiston, Ore., a decathlete, has signed a letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington in 2007-08, Eagles coach Stan Kerr announced.

At the 2006 U.S. Track and Field Oregon Association Championships, Lind won the decathlon as a junior with 6,202 total points. He scored 778 points in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.6 seconds. In the 1,500, he timed 4:28.5 for 754 points. He scored 703 in the 400 with a time of 53.5.

Winter sports

Nate Holland of Sandpoint finished third in men’s snowboard and Spokane’s Cody Smith placed seventh in men’s skiing as the Jeep King of the Mountain Skiing and Snowboarding World Professional Championship series opened in Snowbird, Utah, on Saturday.
