THE SLICE

As we all know, Spokane prides itself on being family focused.

So maybe it’s fitting that the actor who played one of the best-ever movie dads came from here. (You might recall reading an obituary for Darren McGavin back in February that noted he was born in Spokane.)

Though he appeared in a variety of roles, the late actor was best known for playing Ralphie’s gruff father in 1983’s “A Christmas Story.”

That character, “the old man,” wasn’t warm and fuzzy. But his heart was in the right place.

So I propose that Spokane-area fathers salute McGavin’s memory this month by cursing at the furnace, yelling at the neighbor’s dogs, and viewing flat tires as an opportunity to demonstrate manly competence.

And any guy wanting to trot out a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg has my blessing to give it a try.
