All-around experience

Mead finished second to GSL champion University a year ago, but the Panthers still managed the league’s best state showing, placing fifth. The Panthers return All-GSL all-around performers Tonya Turner and Ashley Dotson, both seniors, to lead a strong returning squad. Turner placed 13th as an all-around at last y-ear’s state meet; Dotson 21st. Also back from last year’s state squad are senior Amy Dever, juniors Katie Green and Hilary Nicol, and sophomores Taylor Gray, Cortnie Schramm and Kaitlyn Wilburn.

Veteran groups

Defending league champion U-Hi returns state all-around competitor Monica Marmolejo for her senior season along with a trio of juniors with state meet experience: Alicia Knowles, Taylor Vold and Tatiana Garcia. … Central Valley returns junior Courtney Sexton, an All-GSL pick for floor exercise a year ago. Also back is senior Maria Alderman, a four-year all-around competitor who missed last season after tearing a ligament in her knee on the vault, and senior state veteran Amanda Brantley.

Old and new faces

Ferris’ Karina Caprez competed at state last year as a freshman. … Rogers will have a new look under first-year head coach Esther Gaines. Longtime coach Kathy Harrison, last year’s GSL Coach of the Year, stepped down. … North Central returns a strong group of state Class 3A all-around veterans. Junior Katie Sweatt placed 18th as an all-around at state last year and senior Ali Reid was 35th. NC also has a new head coach in Amy Aspenleiter, an assistant under former coach Amy Allen.
