CSI bests NIC 66-64 in overtime

College of Southern Idaho sophomore forward Alexis Tucker scored the first basket of the game and didn’t have another until striking for three field goals the final 2 minutes of overtime to spur the 13th-ranked Golden Eagles to a 66-64 women’s basketball victory over North Idaho College Friday at Christianson Gym.

It was the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener for both teams.Tucker scored from short range, getting a kind roll on the rim, to even the score at 62 and followed with a power move inside with 54 seconds left.

The Golden Eagles (8-1) got the game-winner when Maylene Ornelas drove, drew a defender and dished to Tucker, who connected from 6 feet with 23 seconds remaining. “We did a lot of good things, but we didn’t execute real well offensively,” coach Chris Carlson of NIC (6-3) said. “Twenty-one turnovers. I mean, they played good defense, but we have options. Our timing wasn’t there.”

•Mandy Morales scored a career-high 33 points to lead Montana past Washington State 71-60 in a non-conference game at Pullman.

Morales went 11 of 19 from the field, including 6 of 12 on 3-pointers. She scored seven points during an early 11-0 run that gave the Grizzlies (7-1) the lead for good.

Dani Montgomery led Washington State (2-6) with 11 points, and Kate Benz chipped in six points and 12 rebounds.

•Eastern Oregon grabbed a 40-18 halftime lead and rolled to a 70-53 non-conference win over Whitworth in La Grande, Ore., handing the Pirates (5-1) their first loss of the season.

The Mountaineers (6-2) held Whitworth to 27 percent shooting from the field in the first half while connecting on 51 percent of their field goals during the game, the highest percentage the Pirates have allowed all season.

Tiffanie Ulmer led EOU with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Volleyball

Washington used a dominant attack to cruise past No. 16 Ohio State 30-16, 30-18, 30-18 in an NCAA regional semifinals match at Seattle.

Stevie Mussie’s 11 kills led the Huskies (28-4) to a .333-.043 attack percentage advantage. Mussie also collected 13 digs for third-ranked Washington. Danielle Meyer and Anna Szerszen each had 12 kills for Ohio State (25-8).
