Griz women deal Cougs a 71-60 loss
Mandy Morales scored a career-high 33 points Friday night to lead Montana past Washington State 71-60 in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Pullman.
Morales went 11 of 19 from the field, including 6 of 12 on 3-pointers. She scored seven points during an early 11-0 run that gave the Grizzlies (7-1) the lead for good. She has averaged 28.3 points during Montana’s four-game winning streak. Sonya Rogers added 13 points for the Grizzlies.
Dani Montgomery led Washington State (2-6) with 11 points, and Kate Benz chipped in six points and 12 rebounds.
Washington State outrebounded the Grizzlies 53-30.
•Eastern Oregon grabbed a 40-18 halftime lead and rolled to a 70-53 non-conference win over Whitworth in La Grande, Ore., handing the Pirates (5-1) their first loss.
The Mountaineers (6-2) held Whitworth to 27 percent shooting from the field in the first half while connecting on 51 percent of their field goals during the game, the highest percentage the Pirates have allowed all season.
Tiffany Corigliano scored 13 off the bench to lead Whitworth.
•College of Southern Idaho sophomore forward Alexis Tucker scored the first basket of the game and didn’t have another until striking for three field goals the final 2 minutes of overtime to spur the 13th-ranked Golden Eagles (8-1) to a 66-64 victory at North Idaho College (6-3) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Volleyball
Washington used a dominant attack to cruise past No. 16 Ohio State 30-16, 30-18, 30-18 in an NCAA regional semifinals match at Seattle.
Stevie Mussie’s 11 kills led the Huskies (28-4) to a .333-.043 attack percentage advantage. Mussie also collected 13 digs, while Jessica Swarbrick chipped in 10 kills for third-ranked Washington. Danielle Meyer and Anna Szerszen each had 12 kills for Ohio State (25-8).
Washington is the only team to have reached the round of eight in each of the past four years.
Junior hockey
Spokane beat host Grand Forks 5-4 in overtime in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League match. Andrew Christ and Evan Witt each scored twice, and Alex Lewica added a goal and two assists for the Braves.
