Students from Three Springs High School in Cheney lent an extra hand, or two or three, in the fight against cancer recently.

Students Sara Gonzales, Sara Hall and Misty Gardner created a full-size quilt for Cheney’s annual quilt raffle to raise money for Relay for Life, a fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

The students traced the hands of friends, family and classmates who have been affected by cancer and sewed those tracings onto a flannel quilt.

“The more they sewed on it, the more they realized what they were giving to the community,” said teacher Lisa Staub. “They were really proud they could give back.”

Three Springs, a small high school in the Cheney School District, offers a choice for students who want an alternative to the regular classroom and gives students who are behind a place to catch up. About 60 students attend the school, attending a full day of school one day a week instead of all five days. All students are required to complete 20 hours of homework each week.

As part of the career and technical education requirement, students in Staub’s home and family courses typically sew something each year.

Students did the majority of the sewing, except the quilting, which was completed by the Garden Gate Fabric Shop.

Cheney sponsors a relay each May and typically raffles off a quilt to raise funds. This year there are four quilts, all with the theme “Helping Hands.”

The Three Springs Quilt is called “Warm Hands.”

The quilt will be displayed around Cheney over the next several months. The drawing will be May 19, the day of the relay.

Raffle tickets are $1 and may be purchased wherever the quilt is on display.

Principal honored

Lidgerwood Elementary School Principal Valorie Chadwick was named Tuesday as the Dick Stannard Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year by Spokane Public Schools.

The award is named after a much-loved Spokane principal who died in 1996.

Every year the Spokane Elementary Principals Association nominates an elementary principal, based on leadership, resource development and interpersonal skills.
