Westerberg, Johnson spark Sun Devils rout
Former Central Valley High School standout Emily Westerberg and Dymond Simon scored 13 points apiece to lead No. 10 Arizona State to a 75-46 rout of UC Irvine on Thursday night in Irvine, Calif.
Aubree Johnson, a Post Falls High graduate, and Danielle Orsillo each added 12 points for the Sun Devils (9-1), who earned their fifth straight win and 18th in 19 regular-season games over two seasons.
Angie Ned and Naomi Halman scored 11 points apiece for the Anteaters (2-6), who have lost five of six. Christina Zdenek added 10 points and Stephanie Duda grabbed 11 rebounds.
Irvine played without leading scorer Kelly Cochran, who averages 12.4 points. She missed her third consecutive game after injuring her right knee last week in practice.
Arizona State took a 17-0 lead in the first 6:11 of the game. UC Irvine did not score a point in the first 6:27 and did not make a basket until 10:23 remained in the first half.
The Sun Devils built a 25-point halftime lead, then started the second half with a 14-4 run powered by six points from Westerberg. Arizona State led by as many as 44.
(16) Louisville 67, Cincinnati 62: At Louisville, Ky., Angel McCoughtry scored 23 of her 25 points in the second half and the Cardinals (10-0) rallied for a victory over the Bearcats (7-2) in the Big East opener for both teams.
McCoughtry, who also had a career-high 18 rebounds, scored eight points during a 16-4 run over 7 minutes that put Louisville ahead 66-62 with 1:40 to play.
Cincinnati went on a 17-7 run with 11:40 left in the first half to take a 33-19 lead.
Shelly Bellman scored five of her team-leading 16 points during the spurt. The Bearcats led 42-35 at halftime.
The win gave Louisville coach Tom Collen his 200th career victory.
Men
Chris Douglas-Roberts scored a career-high 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting to lead No. 19 Memphis to an 88-63 win over Austin Peay in Memphis, Tenn.
Douglas-Roberts, a sophomore guard, shot 8 of 10 from the line and had five assists for Memphis (8-2). The Tigers shot 62 percent from the field.
Doneal Mack, Jeremy Hunt and Kareem Cooper added 11 points each, and Joey Dorsey finished with 11 rebounds. Cooper hit all five of his shots.
Derek Wright led the Governors (3-5) with 18 points, and Fernandez Lockett had 12.
Memphis scored the game’s first 10 points and built a 22-2 lead and Austin Peay never threatened.
