GSL doubleheaders tonight for CV, U-Hi, EV
Spokane Valley high school basketball teams conclude a three-game Greater Spokane League week tonight. Central Valley and University are home and East Valley is at Ferris for boys and girls doubleheaders.
CV’s boys and girls were both 2-3 heading into Friday games, after splitting Tuesday at Rogers. The Bears boys lost 66-61; the girls made nine 3-point baskets for a 66-56 triumph.
The Knights boys (1-3) won for the first time, rolling to a 17-point lead and holding off Lewis and Clark 55-49. But EV girls (3-1) lost for the first time, 60-39, to the unbeaten Tigers.
U-Hi’s girls (4-1) continued to chase LC and were at Mead Friday night in a pivotal game. The Titans won easily at Gonzaga Prep, 57-30. The boys (0-5) are still looking for their first victory after losing to the Bullpups 77-51.
Through the first five games of the season numerous individual players are doing well.
The one-two punch of Bears Nick Ambrose and Kevin Cameron has accounted for nearly 31 points per game. Ambrose is averaging 17.2 and Cameron 13.4 per contest. Justine Bowman leads CV girls scorers. She had 15 points, Tristina Kline had a season-high 16 and between them they had seven 3-point baskets against the Pirates. Mallory Flesher (13 points) and Alexa Morales (10) also were in double figures.
EV’s Danny Marshall is averaging 13.5 points per game. On Tuesday he had 11, Tanner Hamilton and Lonnie Quirk added 10 points each, while Adam Markham and Josh Peck combined for 17 more in the team effort.
University’s one-two punch of Angie Bjorklund and Dara Zack continue to lead the Titan girls, averaging a combined 41 points per game. Bjorklund became the GSL’s second-best career scorer in all games, moving past CV’s Emily Westerberg, when she moved past 1,500 total on Tuesday. She’s averaging 24.8 this year and needs another 179 points to break the all-time mark held by LC’s Heather Bowman. Zack is scoring at a 16.2 pace. Sophomore Mason Johnson is scoring at a 17.2 clip for the boys.
West Valley’s boys defeated Moscow 53-48 to improve to 2-1 for the year. Bryan Peterson maintained his hot hand with 19 points. He had a 22-point game earlier and is averaging 17.7 for the year. Casey Sherrill is scoring at a 13.7 clip. They are at Sandpoint today, while the girls are playing in a tournament in Newport.
Wrestlers still perfect
It wasn’t easy for University. In fact, until R.J. Daschbach scored eight points in the final 1:36 of his 10-2 victory in the night’s next-to-last match, the Titans’ 38-27 victory over Mt. Spokane was very much up in the air.
But they, along with Central Valley and East Valley remain undefeated in Greater Spokane League wrestling.
Daschbach trailed 4-2 when he earned a takedown and recorded two 3-point near falls for the match-clinching triumph at 160 pounds.
U-Hi wrestled four freshmen in the match and held out several regulars bound for this weekend’s Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene.
Two early pins and frosh Sean Mott‘s major decision at 103 pounds put the Titans up 16-3. Score was just 16-15 when coach Don Owen called upon standout Anthony Rivera at 125 to help stem the tide.
U-Hi went back in front 35-18 on a pin by Elliott Nay (140) and technical fall by Nick Bickley (145).
Central Valley, meanwhile, won an easier than expected match at Mead 51-18, and East Valley beat Shadle Park and improving Ferris with nearly identical scores, 52-24 and 45-28. All three Valley schools are 3-0.
An early pin by Jeff Croskrey at 140 pounds and injury default win by Jason Choate (145) set the tone for the Bears who won 11 of 14 matches, including the final six at Mead.
Among CV’s victors were state champions Tanner Teeples (112) and Nick Cambron (119) and junior 215 pounder Tyler Cochran.
Knights Caleb Alvarado, Dakota Lawson, Clete Hanson, Dan Michalski, Jimmy Martin and Nic Weyrauch all won twice last week from 152 through 275 pounds during the twin triumphs.
Gymnasts reach break
Greater Spokane League gymnasts have reached the holiday break, Central Valley and University both with identical 5-1 overall records.
The Bears lost to unbeaten Mead 167.4 to 161.475 in a noncounter on Wednesday. Maria Alderman scored 34.05 for third all-around. She won floor exercise in 9.35 and was second on bars and third during vault.
Courtney Sexton was fifth overall with a 32.95 total.
U-Hi defeated North Central, Ferris and Mt. Spokane. The Titans scored 164.475 points to win by nearly 24. Renee Messling won all-around with 35.775 points, and Tabitha Ward was third at 32.625.
Messling won balance beam, floor exercise and vault all with 9-plus point scores. She was second on uneven bars. Ward was second during floor exercise and vault. Monica Marmolejo finished second on beam and Taylor Vold third on vault.
Lancers are back
Mountain View wrestlers, dethroned last year, are back atop the Spokane Valley Middle School All-League tournament.
The Lancers, undefeated during dual competition, scored 167 points to defending champion Bowdish’s 102 for the tournament championship.
They had five individual champions, Nick Sweeney (75 pounds), Dillon Chiquette (80), Tyler Tran (105), Dillon Cupp (142) and Charlie Hoff (15) among 11 finalists and a total of 18 top-four placers in 19 weight classes.
Seven of nine schools in the tournament had at least one individual champion. Bowdish finished with four and 11 medalists. Third-place East Valley (99 points) had three champs among 12 medalists.
Other weight class winners were: Bowdish – Pierce Campbell (115), Ronnie Lewis (130), Joel Orchard (135) and Dustin Johnson (172); EV - David Fields (85), Ronnie Jarvis (125) and Brad Soom (unlimited); Greenacres - Jarod Maynes (90) and Bradlee Pippenger (95); North Pines – Tyler Clark (100) and Mitchell Bell (110); Horizon – Taylor Keeton (120) and Jacob Fry (160), and Centennial’s Connor McKinnon, 275.
