Wie takes Tiger’s path to Stanford
Michelle Wie, 17, is following another golf prodigy to Stanford.
Wie found out Friday she was accepted to the university and said Tuesday she would enroll in the fall – not concentrate exclusively on her pro career. Tiger Woods was at Stanford for two years before going pro. “Hopefully, I’ll last a little longer,” Wie said.
“Now that I got into Stanford,” she said, “it was one of my dreams. … I definitely want to go there and really try to graduate.”

Another award for Mr. Smith
Troy Smith’s evolution from running quarterback to precise passer made No. 1 Ohio State all but unstoppable this season – and helped him win The Associated Press Player of the Year honor.
The Buckeyes’ senior won the AP award about as easily as he won the Heisman Trophy, drawing 59 of 65 first-place votes.

An endorsement Mac doesn’t need
Pete Rose thinks Mark McGwire should be in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Baseball’s banished hits king said that McGwire, who is on the ballot for the first time, ought to be voted in despite his refusal to discuss steroids. Rose isn’t eligible for the ballot because of his lifetime ban for gambling.
Rose made the case for McGwire by noting that baseball didn’t crack down on steroids until after the 2002 season, by which time McGwire had retired.

Are Mariners doing enough?
Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi hinted this week the M’s were not finished in the free-agent market, and there was a report out of Seattle the team was still part of the Barry Zito sweepstakes.
Barring that, do you think Bavasi has done enough in the off-season to improve the last-place club? Have the moves strengthened the M’s to the extent they can challenge in the A.L. West?
