Santa Clara topples GU
Michelle Cozad had 11 points during a critical 19-6 second-half run Thursday as host Santa Clara (12-9, 6-2) rolled to a 74-52 West Coast Conference women’s basketball win over Gonzaga.
Jami Bjorklund (University High) notched a career-high 20 points to lead the Bulldogs (10-13, 5-3). Ashley Anderson, WCC Player of the Month for January, scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Gonzaga.
Hawaii (13-8, 2-5) rallied behind three players in double digits to overcome a five-point, first-half deficit and defeat Idaho (7-12, 3-5) 66-60 in a Western Athletic Conference game in Moscow, Idaho.
Stephanie Cherry had 20 points to lead five players in double figures, and host Sacramento State edged Eastern Washington 69-61 in a Big Sky Conference game. The Hornets (7-11, 2-4) held EWU’s starters to 24 points.
Julie Page came off the bench to lead the Eagles (9-10, 3-3) with 19 points.
Men’s basketball
Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison was selected WCC Player of the Month for January. Morrison guided the Bulldogs to a 7-0 conference mark while leading the nation with a 31.3 scoring average for the month.
College baseball
Texas Pan American defeated Gonzaga 8-3 in the season opener for both teams in Edinburg, Texas.
Boxing
The Howard Street Boxing Club, formerly the Spokane Eagles Boxing Club, will host the Inland Northwest Senior Boxing Championships Saturday at the East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone. The amateur card will feature six bouts, beginning at 1 p.m.
