Batter up

Most kids who love baseball have at one time or another imagined themselves belting out a home run in the final game of the World Series. Now Valley kids ages 5-12 can feed those dreams in the new Eastside Little League division.

Children must live in the attendance boundaries of Greenacres Middle School or Mountain View Middle School. Parents should bring proof of residency and children’s birth certificates. Registration is today from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Harvard Animal Clinic, 4904 N. Harvard Road. The cost is $60 for ages 5-6 and $85 for ages 7-12.

Call 263-0310 for additional registration times and locations.

Breathing fire

Tonight is opening night at the latest Theater Arts for Children production, “The Reluctant Dragon.” The dragon, a likable creature that enjoys tea and poetry, is set upon by a once-famous but now aging dragon slayer who is egged on by the village children in a comic tale.

The curtain rises at 7 p.m. at the Spokane Valley Community Center, 10814 E. Broadway Ave. All seats are $5, which includes admission to the cast party following the show. Call 892-5413 for a full schedule of performances.

SUNDAY

Flipping for you

Running the rapids is fun, but can often involve a dunking in frigid spring water as boats are tossed from wave to wave. (Don’t forget your lifejackets!) In anticipation of a rousing whitewater season, the Northwest Whitewater Association is sponsoring a whitewater safety seminar at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Valley YMCA at Mirabeau Point. The class will cover how to right flipped boats, work with rescue ropes, and lessons in water hydraulics.

The seminar will be run by people certified in swiftwater rescues. Association members may attend for free; members of the general public must pay $25. Call (208) 661-3042 for more information.
