Gretzkys headed to Winter Olympics

Janet Jones will accompany husband Wayne Gretzky to Italy for the Winter Olympics, a few days after she was implicated in an alleged gambling ring involving NHL players.

Gretzky, the executive director of Canada’s Olympic hockey team, previously said he was going to Turin this weekend. His wife was going, too, her publicist Elliot Mintz confirmed.

Gretzky plans to arrive in Italy on Tuesday, flying in with the team favored to win Olympic gold.

Wild 6, Oilers 3: Pierre-Marc Bouchard set a team record with two goals in a span of 16 seconds, and Minnesota won at Edmonton, Alberta.

Flames 3, Blues 2 (OT): Dion Phaneuf scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead Calgary over St. Louis at Calgary, Alberta.

Rangers 4, Maple Leafs 2: Jaromir Jagr scored twice and added an assist in New York’s four-goal second period as the Rangers won at Toronto.

Avalanche 4, Blue Jackets 1: Marek Svatos scored twice in a 3-minute span of the third period to lead Colorado to a win at Columbus, Ohio.

Penguins 4, Hurricanes 3: John LeClair whipped in a rebound for the go-ahead goal in the final minute of the second period and lowly Pittsburgh edged Carolina at Raleigh, N.C.

Flyers 5, Capitals 4: Sami Kapanen scored the go-ahead goal and Brian Savage had two power-play scores, leading Philadelphia past visiting Washington.

Mighty Ducks 3, Canucks 1: Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist as Anaheim won at Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sharks 6, Stars 3: Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek each scored a pair of goals to lead San Jose past Dallas at San Jose, Calif.

Potvin’s death ruled suicide

The death of ex-NHL player Marc Potvin, 38, has been ruled a suicide.

Potvin used a belt to hang himself from a shower curtain rod in Kalamazoo, Mich. Potvin, coach of the Adirondack Frostbite of the UHL, was found dead Jan. 13 in his Kalamazoo hotel room just hours before his team was to play against the Kalamazoo Wings.
