Mike Weir closed with three birdies at Poppy Hills to finish with a 5-under-par 67 Friday, moving into the lead after two rounds at the Pebble Beach (Calif.) National Pro-Am.
Weir finished his first nine holes in even par, but after the turn he moved up the leaderboard as first-round leader Luke Donald sputtered at Pebble Beach and fell to third.
Aaron Oberholser followed up his first-round 65 with a 4-under 68 at Spyglass Hill to move into second place at 11 under, three shots back of Weir.
Dick Harmon, 58, part of golf’s most renowned teaching family and the son of former Masters champ Claude Harmon, died in Palm Desert, Calif. The cause of death wasn’t disclosed.

Shell returns to Raiders
The Oakland Raiders’ coaching search finally came to an end when the team hired former coach Art Shell to replace Norv Turner.
Quarterback David Carr will be with the Houston Texans another three years, perhaps an indication the team might favor Heisman Trophy running back Reggie Bush over Texas QB Vince Young with the top pick in the NFL draft. The Texans had the option of extending their QB’s contract for two seasons, but made it three.
Former Ohio State star tailback Maurice Clarett was indicted in Columbus, Ohio, on charges of robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. Clarett is accused of flashing a gun and demanding property from a man and a woman early Jan. 1.

U.S. team 1-1 in Cup
After Andy Roddick lost, James Blake won in straight sets to give the United States a 1-1 tie with Romania in the opening round of Davis Cup play in San Diego. Blake defeated Victor Hanescu 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-2 following Andrei Pavel’s 6-7 (2), 2-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2, 6-4 upset of an ailing Roddick.
College basketball
Snyder quits
Missouri basketball coach Quin Snyder resigned and associate head coach Melvin Watkins is expected to coach the team for the rest of the year. Missouri has fallen to 3-7 – and next-to-last – in the Big 12.
Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton, 69, was hospitalized in good condition after being injured in a car accident in Stillwater, Okla.

Tribe keeps team
Yakama tribal members have decided to retain ownership of the Sun Kings, a Continental Basketball Association franchise, for three years.
Second baseman Alfonso Soriano lost to the Washington Nationals in salary arbitration and will receive $10 million rather than his request for $12 million.
Pitcher Shawn Chacon and the New York Yankees agreed to a $3.6 million, one-year contract.
