Kings snap seven-game skid in OT

Joe Corvo scored on a power play 40 seconds into overtime and the Los Angeles Kings snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday with a 5-4 victory over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks.

Corvo, Craig Conroy and Tom Kostopoulos each had a goal and an assist. Pavol Demitra scored a short-handed goal and Eric Belanger extended his goal-scoring streak to three games, helping the Kings win for only the fourth time in their last 16 games.

Martin Lapointe scored the tying goal midway through the third period and Rene Bourque also scored for Chicago. Tyler Arnason and defenseman Brent Seabrook had power-play goals for the Blackhawks, who came in with the league’s worst power-play percentage and were 3 for 40 with the man advantage their previous nine games.

Islanders 2, Devils 1: At East Rutherford, N.J., Alexei Yashin had a goal and an assist and Rick DiPietro made 26 saves as New York beat New Jersey to end a two-game losing streak. Jason Blake also scored for New York, which snapped the Devils’ eight-game home winning streak.

Rangers 4, Maple Leafs 2: At Toronto, Jaromir Jagr scored twice to reach 40 goals for the sixth time in his career as New York completed a sweep of the home-and-home series and won its sixth straight. Petr Sykora and Martin Rucinsky also scored for the Rangers, who have won 10 of 12 and head into the Olympic break in first place in the Atlantic Division. Jagr leads the NHL in goals and points (88).

Thrashers 2, Canadiens 1 (SO): At Montreal, Slava Kozlov scored the only shootout goal to lift Atlanta over the Canadiens. Thrashers rookie Kari Lehtonen made 26 saves and stopped Alex Kovalev and Alexander Perezhogin before denying Michael Ryder on Montreal’s third shot after Kozlov put a backhand through Cristobal Huet’s legs on Atlanta’s third shootout attempt.

Senators 3, Flyers 2: At Ottawa, Dany Heatley scored 19 seconds into the second period and the Senators held on to beat Philadelphia. Heatley’s 34th goal of the season put Ottawa ahead 3-0 before the Flyers rallied with two goals later in the second to make it close.

Lightning 6, Bruins 5: At Boston, Dmitry Afanasenkov and Vaclav Prospal scored two goals apiece, and Tampa Bay won in Boston for the first time in nearly 12 years. Prospal scored the winning goal during a two-man advantage with 6:12 remaining.

Penguins 6, Capitals 3: At Washington, Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist, leading Pittsburgh over the Capitals in a showdown between the NHL’s rookie scoring leaders. Crosby moved within four points of the Capitals’ Alexander Ovechkin, who scored his 36th goal and extended his franchise rookie record with his 69th point.

Sabres 5, Panthers 3: At Buffalo, N.Y., Thomas Vanek scored twice to help the Sabres defeat Florida and improve to 8-0-1 in their last nine games. J.P. Dumont and Jason Pominville had a goal and assist each, and Jiri Novotny scored his first career goal for the Sabres. Derek Roy and Maxim Afinogenov had two assists.

Predators 5, Blue Jackets 2: At Nashville, Tenn., Marek Zidlicky scored two power-play goals and added an assist to help the Predators defeat Columbus and snap a three-game losing streak. Zidlicky’s second goal tied the score 2-all at 12:22 of the first, and Scottie Upshall gave the Predators the lead for good 5:13 later. Martin Erat and Kimmo Timonen scored in the second period to seal the win.

Montreal re-signed captain Saku Koivu to a $14.25-million, three-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season. The deal also includes a no-trade clause. … Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig signed a two-year contract extension, lengthening his record 13-year tenure with the franchise. … Toronto signed defenseman Tomas Kaberle to a five-year, $21.5 million contract extension through the 2010-11 season.
