Get out, get going

Skate

It’s not often you can skateboard outside in the middle of winter, but today is your chance. Valley YMCA has dug out its skate park, dried it off and practically shined it for their first ever Dig Out event. There will be free skating from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., plus a packed schedule of other activities including contests and live music. Professional boarders Scott Yamamura and Anthony Carney will be there.

Riders of all ages are welcome, but they must wear a helmet and have a signed waiver in order to set their wheels on the concrete. Food items will be available for purchase. The skate park is at 2421 N. Discovery Place. Call 777-9622 for more information.

It’s party time

Having fun while raising money for a good cause is a pretty guiltless way to spend a Saturday afternoon. It’s also a good way to banish thoughts of all the house cleaning you should be doing and spend a little quality time with the kids. The Veradale United Church of Christ will put on a carnival today from 3 to 7 p.m. The church youth are hosting the event to raise money for an upcoming mission trip.

In addition to the carnival games there will be face painting, a bake sale and ice cream. Admission is $1 or a nonperishable food item for the Valley Food Bank. The church is at 611 N. Progress Road.

Theater preview

You’ve seen the movie and pretty soon you’ll have a chance to see a local production of “Charlie and Chocolate Factory.” Actors from Christian Youth Theater will give a short preview of their upcoming play at 11 a.m. today at Barnes & Noble, 15310 E. Indiana Ave. Stop by for a taste of what is to come.
