Busy week ahead for prep basketball teams
West Valley has qualified for state boys basketball three times this decade. North Central last did so 55 years ago.
Both have a chance to do so tonight with the start of the Regional 3A tournament against Mid-Valley League schools.
Also tonight is the first round of District 8 4A play, with two boys and girls regional qualifying games.
Three teams from the eight-team 3A regional advance to state. The district champion Eagles and Indians are in the double-elimination four-team round and will qualify for state with wins tonight. Cheney hosts a loser-out game needing three wins to reach state.
There were surprises in the Mid-Valley when fifth-place league finisher WV-Yakima upset league champ Ellensburg and third-place Sunnyside lost twice to be eliminated.
The Rams are at West Valley-Spokane, NC is at district champion Hanford, the league’s second-place regular season team. Cheney hosts Selah, sixth with a 3-9 regular season record, but fourth in district.
District champion Clarkston girls host WV-Yakima, the Mid-Valley regular season champ but second to Hanford in district. The Falcons host East Valley.
The tournament continues in Cheney on Friday and Saturday.
