Churches plan Ash Wednesday services
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, and area churches are marking the occasion with special services to start the Lenten season.
“ Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third Ave., is offering an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.
The service will include rubbing ashes on the foreheads of the congregation.

“ Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., is offering its Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. and will burn last year’s palm branches for ashes.

CYT presents ‘A Year With Frog and Toad’
Christian Youth Theater is presenting its musical production of “A Year with Frog and Toad,” Friday and Saturday and March 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. at The Met Theatre, 901 W. Sprague Ave. The show will also be performed at 3 p.m. Saturday and March 4 and 5.
Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and children 12 and younger. The 3 p.m. Saturday performance will be $5 for everyone.

Concert, conference and worship at St. Andrews
The Rev. John Smylie is offering a three-day concert, conference and worship service event Friday, Saturday and Sunday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2404 N. Howard St.
The event kicks off with a concert of Smylie’s original compositions at 7 p.m. A reception will follow.
On Saturday, Smylie will present “Grace for Today,” a conference and workshop that will discuss God’s grace found in everyday moments, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants should bring a sack lunch.
Smylie also will perform at worship services Sunday at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Faith and science lecture series begins Monday
Gonzaga University and Whitworth College are presenting a three-part lecture series Monday through Wednesday.
“Physics and the God of Abraham” will discuss the relationship between faith, particularly the Christian faith, and science.
The first part, “The Beginnings of the Universe: Big Bang Cosmology and Creation,” will be presented by the Rev. William Stoeger at 7 p.m. Monday in the Seeley G. Mudd Chapel at Whitworth College, 300 W. Hawthorne Rd.
Stoeger also will present the second part, “God as Creator: Divine Immanence, Evolution and the Laws of Nature,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth campus.
The Rev. Robert Spitzer will speak on the topic, “Philosophical Implications for Creation and Design Arising out of Contemporary Big Bang Cosmology,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Barbieri Courtroom of the Gonzaga School of Law, 721 N. Cincinnati St.
