Talk about your fat cats (and dogs)

Paul Turner The Spokesman-Review

New surveys show that an alarming percentage of American dogs and cats are obese.

Clearly they need to get out and walk now and then instead of taking the car everywhere.

And all that TV they watch probably doesn’t help.

OK, let’s move on.

“Speaking of TV: Why do people who aren’t watching the Olympics feel the need to make a point of telling everyone that?

So, OK. Don’t watch. Fine. Who cares? And let me get this straight. You’re bragging about watching “American Idol”?

“Spokane’s quintessential sound: “My nomination is something that I had never heard before I moved here four years ago — the sound of studded tires tapping the pavement,” wrote Rhonda Olive. “It is just like nails on a chalkboard to me because I know the shredded pavement is shortening the life of my regular tires.”

Karen Buck said it’s the sound of trains. “I don’t think I could live someplace where I couldn’t hear a train,” she said.

“We’re having leftovers again: “The best macaroni and cheese in town or the world is called nannamac,” wrote 9-year-old Jordan Boone, a fourth-grader at Pratt Elementary. “It is made by my grandmother Margo Witters. Me and my brother think she should sell it and probably get rich.”

Rachel Hay said Adela with the Head Start program at the Northeast Community Center makes the best.

And several readers touted The Onion’s mac and cheese.

“Failure to communicate: While reading last Thursday’s S-R classifieds, Florence Young noticed something under the “Building materials” heading that made her look twice. It was a reference to “naughty pine.”

“Are you expected to discipline or retrain it?” she wondered.

Maybe it’s for use in a special kind of rec room.

And last Friday, while perusing a store’s advertising insert in the S-R, Dana Eberly was surprised to see that a wrenches/pliers/screwdrivers set for kids was described as “All Steal Tools.”

She wondered if the implements in question were intended for junior burglars in training.

“Warm-up questions: Other than doctors and lawyers, practitioners of what profession have to spend the most time disabusing clients/customers of erroneous information they picked up from TV shows and know-it-all co-workers? How often do you drop the pills you are trying to take? What’s the definition of a “nonconformist” in Spokane? Ever buy a new-brand canned beverage without realizing it contained alcohol?

“Today’s Slice question: What Inland Northwest resident does business in one way or another with the greatest number of first cousins?
