Three from NC medal
Three wrestlers had three medals for North Central during last weekend’s Mat Classic XVIII in Tacoma.
Jamie Tamura finished second in the 3A tournament at 125 pounds, Dan Seibert was fifth at 135 and Scott Harris placed fifth at 145 for the Indians, who placed 11th as a team with 45 points.
“We did OK, but you don’t go to practice to be OK. That wasn’t our goal,” said coach Mike Ranieri. “But the kids wrestled hard and competed to their ability.”
NC’s three placers were among 21 North Side wrestlers who brought home medals from the annual state wrestling tournament.
In 4A, Mead’s Matt Senescall rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to eventual 215-pound champion Kevin Kooyman of Tahoma to win three straight matches and place fourth.
Mt. Spokane’s Matt Schaffer also finished fourth, at 189 pounds. He lost his first match before winning his next four for the medal. Teammate Noah Hatton was seventh for the second straight year, at 145 pounds.
One of his losses was to Gonzaga Prep’s Jon Healy, another GSL fourth-place finisher.
Youth served in 2A
Lakeside’s State 2A champions weren’t the only young Great Northern League team at state.
Riverside finished 11th with 60 points, and Deer Park placed 15th with 48. Each had four state placers.
Rams sophomore Ryan DesRoches won the 160-pound title and was one of three placers who will return. He had two pins and two victories by decision, including 7-2 for the title.
“It was my goal, as a whole,” said DesRoches of the title. “I didn’t know if it was going to happen, but it’s awesome.”
Teammate Robert Spackman ended his career with his third medal and second consecutive fourth-place finish.
Deer Park wrestlers tested the state waters with better things to come. All four state placers return.
State 103-pound runner-up Levi Zadorozny is a sophomore, and two others are freshmen.
