Hawk helps Gonzaga soar into first

Stephanie Hawk notched a double-double with 19 points, including 7-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line, and 15 rebounds to lead Gonzaga past San Diego 58-51 in a West Coast Conference matchup in San Diego on Thursday.

GU moved into a three-way tie for first place with Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara.

Jami Bjorklund (University High) added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (15-13, 10-3), and Anne Bailey scored 10.

Gonzaga held the Toreros (8-18, 3-10) to 32 percent field-goal shooting, including 29 percent in the second half.

Kelly Winther scored 14 for San Diego.

•California jumped out to a 22-7 lead midway through the first half, and Washington State couldn’t recover in a 61-51 Pacific-10 Conference loss in Berkeley, Calif.

WSU (8-18, 2-15) tied the game at 39 on a 3-pointer from Katie Appleton with just less than 10 minutes left, but the Golden Bears (17-10, 9-8) used a pair of 6-0 runs to put the game away.

Reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week Kate Benz recorded her third consecutive double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars.

•Candice Wiggins made a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead Stanford to a 100-69 Pac-10 win over Washington in Stanford, Calif.

Brooke Smith added 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Cardinal (20-6, 14-3), who clinched at least a share of their sixth straight conference championship.

Breanne Watson scored 12, and Jill Bell and Andrea Plouffe each had 10 points for the Huskies (18-8, 11-6).

•Montana extended its home winning streak against Eastern Washington to 22 with a 79-54 Big Sky Conference win in Missoula.

Dana Conway scored 17 to lead five Montana (19-5, 8-3) players in double figures, and Mandy Morales finished with 13 points and 10 assists.

Abby Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points in 9 minutes to lead EWU, which received only 24 points from its starters. The Eagles have a 1-11 record on the road this season.

•Hawaii handed Idaho its 10th straight road defeat and third consecutive loss overall in a 71-62 Western Athletic Conference decision on Wednesday in Honolulu.

The Vandals (8-16, 4-9) used runs of 9-2 and 12-4 to build a 39-31 halftime lead, but the Rainbows (15-8, 6-6) picked up the defense in the second half and held Idaho to 25 percent shooting from the field.

Hawaii built a 52-45 lead midway through the second half. Idaho got within four points at 56-52, but the Rainbows followed with an 8-1 run to put the game away.

Emily Faurholt led all scorers with 20 points for the Vandals.
