Trammel just misses out on making U.S. history
Terrence Trammell came so close to becoming the first athlete to win two national indoor championships. Instead, he had to settle for making the roster for the world championships in two events.
Trammell won his third U.S. indoor title in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.46 seconds at the U.S. Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday in Boston. Dominique Arnold finished second in 7.51.
Twenty minutes after winning the hurdles title, Trammell finished second in the 60 in 6.53. Leonard Scott won his first national title in 6.52.
The top two finishers in each event – excluding Friday’s weight throws – qualify for the world championships on March 10-12 in Moscow.
“I’m just glad to be on the team,” said Trammell, whose hurdles mark is the world’s fastest time this year. “I just tried to carry my momentum from the hurdles to the dash. That was my focus, just to keep the ball rolling and try to get all the way through the tape.”
Trammell, who captured silver at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics in the 110 hurdles, won the 2001 world indoor title in the 60 hurdles but has yet to win a world sprinting title.
With the 60 hurdles and 60 dash taking place on different days in Moscow, he’ll be in good position to change that.
Lisa Barber won the women’s 60 in 7.06. Reigning world 100 champion Lauryn Williams finished second in 7.11. Torri Edwards, competing in her first race on U.S. soil since being reinstated from a drug suspension, finished third.
•Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands defended her title in the World’s Best 10K race in Carolina, Puerto Rico, while Kenya’s Wilson Kebenei Kiprotich dominated the men’s race.

Landis a winner
Floyd Landis won the Tour of California cycling race after finishing the final stage in Redondo, Beach, Calif., in the main pack.
Olaf Pollack of Germany took the final stage – 10 laps of a 7.65-mile circuit – in 2 hours, 50 minutes, 27 seconds, but Landis held onto the overall lead for the fifth day since moving to the top with a dominating individual time trial win in San Jose on Wednesday.
•North America’s tallest mountain is getting too crowded for safety.
Starting next year, the National Park Service will cap the number of climbers allowed on Alaska’s Mount McKinley at 1,500 a year – not too many more than the record 1,340 alpinists who attempted to scale the 20,320-foot mountain last year.
