Every woodworker looks forward to that special project that has the potential to become a family heirloom. This grandfather clock project, with its traditional good looks and sturdy design, just might be the one.

Standing an impressive 6 feet tall, the clock is built from oak (other woods will also work). The classic design is complemented by the famous Westminster clock movement, which authentically reproduces the chimes of London’s Big Ben.

What you do

Although the project does take some time and attention to detail, it’s simple enough for most woodworkers. The case is essentially a large rectangular box, and the curved cuts for the clock’s crown and decorative plaque are traced from full-size patterns.

Once the case is built, the decorative details (which give the effect of molding by using multiple layers of wood) are added and a battery-powered clock movement is installed. To finish, stain and seal the project and install the glass.

A package of three case clock plans, No. C157, is $22.95 and includes plans for this grandfather clock, a Craftsman-style grandfather clock and smaller-scale “granddaughter” clock.
