Zags on target, beat Vikings
Gonzaga University was pretty much on the money with its shooting Monday night as the Bulldogs dispatched visiting Portland State 81-57 in a non-league women’s basketball game before 1,003 fans in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The balanced Bulldogs, with five players in double figures and getting scoring from 12 of the 13 who played, shot 46 percent from the field in collecting just their second win in seven games to improve their record to 5-10.
Anne Bailey led the double-figure quintet with 13 points and the other four – starter Stephanie Hawk and reserves Maria Hassett, Ashley Anderson and Jami Bjorklund – had 10 each.
As a group, they shot 20 of 30 from the field. GU was 30 of 65 as a team.
On the defensive end, GU limited Portland State (6-6) to just 32 percent shooting from the field (16 of 50), including an icy 3 of 19 (16 percent) in the first half when the Bulldogs built a 34-20 halftime lead.
GU opened the game with a 15-0 run, with Sasha Polishchuck and Katy Ridenour hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to get it started.
Kelsey Kahle led the Vikings with 19 points, including a 13-of-19 effort from the free throw line.
Hawk led the Bulldogs’ 47-28 domination on the boards with 10 rebounds, and Bailey pulled down eight.
