Varnell, Powell power LC to mat win

Trevor Powell and Anthony Varnell picked up big wins Wednesday as Lewis and Clark battled past visiting North Central 42-30 in a Greater Spokane League wrestling contest.

Powell scored a 7-0 decision over fellow returning regional qualifier Jamie Tamura at 125 pounds, while Varnell remained undefeated in league at 140 after a pin of D.J. May.

Also in GSL action, after falling behind early in the match, West Valley used five wins in the middle of its order to pull out a 44-26 win over visiting Rogers. Zack Thomas (112), Tony Valente (119), Justin Fiman (125), Bryan Felix (130), and Ryan Parsley (135) picked up wins during the rally. … Paul Sensecal started the night off with a 7-1 decision over Bryce Malone at the 215 class to set the tone in Mead’s 50-20 win at Mt. Spokane. Wes Reasor had an 8-0 major decision win for the Panthers at 140. … Returning state participant Taylor Yonago scored a 9-2 decision over Blaine Shippy, but visiting Shadle Park routed Ferris 53-16. Joel Howard (140) and Logan Steele (160) scored pins for the Highlanders, while teammate Paul Burdulis pulled out a 5-3 overtime decision over Billy Mulkin at 152. … Nic Weyrauch (275), Kyle Hunter (103), Matt Mehlbrech (125), Daniel MIchalski (189) and Bryce Fisher (152) recorded pins as East Valley steamrolled at Cheney 63-6. … Clarkston used closing pins from Danny Dahl (171), Wes Braun (189) and Frank Willis (215) in its 42-28 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep.

Gymnastics

Ashley Dotson and Tonya Turner helped Mead to a victory in a GSL four-way meet at Central Valley. Dotson scored three first-place finishes on her way to landing the top all-around spot. Turner had two second-place finishes and a pair of third-place finishes to land behind Dotson in the all-around. … Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) pulled out a narrow win over visiting North Central, despite landing only one in the all-around top-five. Lindsay Jelke marked the lone Eagle in the all-around top five, while NC’s Katie Sweatt earned all-around honors.

Boys basketball

Josiah Menzies scored 28 points to highlight a quartet of players in double figures as Coeur d’Alene Charter defeated visiting Timberlake (2-7) 84-35 in non-league play. Menzies hit eight 3-pointers, while Cameron Hjeltness scored all 12 of his points from the 3-point line. Chris Shaw and Michael Gleixner added 12 and 10, respectively, for the Panthers (6-3).

•Jesse James recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to help Mullan slip by visiting Clark Fork 40-34 in North Star League play. Cory Pehan contributed nine points and 11 boards for the Tigers (5-3, 1-1). The Wampus Cats fell to 2-6, 1-2.
