Zags have spoiled their followers

The Spokesman-Review

Regarding Robert Bierman’s letter (Jan. 1, “Zags haven’t played up to potential”). I struggled with responding, but after mulling it over for 24 hours, I felt compelled to address his concerns.

Through games of Jan. 1, 2006, Gonzaga had the No. 3 RPI (RPIRatings.com) in the nation, behind only Duke and Memphis. Despite this strength of schedule, and playing many games with 60 percent of their projected preseason lineup, the Zags have compiled an outstanding out-of-conference record of 10-3.

Singling out GU’s guards for poor point production and poor decision-making when driving the lane is an unjust criticism. Derek Raivio is coming off that dreadful injury suffered against UW, P-Mac is a sophomore who is improving each game and Jeremy Pargo and Larry Gurganious are two freshmen most teams in the country would be thrilled to have on their roster.

J.P. Batista may have had an off game but is still the best low-post player in the country – witness his recent performance vs. Saint Joe’s. Errol Knight is working his way back into the lineup as he recovers from a knee injury, and when Josh Heytvelt returns, this edition of the Gonzaga Bulldogs will be a threat to everyone in March.

I dare say we have been spoiled by Gonzaga basketball, especially since 1999, but if Bierman is so terribly disenchanted, I suggest he find another team.
