Gonzaga women win 19th straight in WCC
Senior Ashley Anderson had her second straight double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds and the Gonzaga University women’s basketball team won its 19th straight West Coast Conference game, beating Saint Mary’s 56-42 Sunday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Anderson scored 13 points in the first half when the Bulldogs (7-10, 2-0) shot just 23.1 percent (6 of 26) and trailed 22-19 at halftime.
Jontelle Smith of Saint Mary’s converted one of two free throws with 6 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the game to tie the score at 40. Gonzaga scored 16 of the final 18 points in the game to win going away.
Stephanie Hawk contributed 13 points and eight rebounds for Gonzaga, which improved to 5-1 at home this season.
Maija Lahde led Saint Mary’s (6-9, 1-1) with 10 points, while Serena Benavente pulled down nine rebounds and dished out four assists.
Saint Mary’s managed only four free throws in 19 attempts, while Gonzaga was 16 of 29 from the free throw line.

The Castlegar Rebels got goals from Scott Burke and Evan Bloodoff to claim a 2-0 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Spokane Braves Sunday at Castlegar, British Columbia.
