Stars come back from three-goal deficit to clip Red Wings

Associated Press

Detroit coach Mike Babcock was at a loss to explain his team’s collapse.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Babcock after the Red Wings blew a 3-0 lead in a 6-3 loss to Dallas on Sunday night in Detroit. “We lost our composure and turned the puck over and just couldn’t get settled down again.”

Jere Lehtinen scored two goals, Niklas Hagman, Philippe Boucher, Niko Kapanen, and Mathias Tjarnqvist also scored for Dallas, which didn’t even get a shot until 6:43 remained in the first period.

Mike Modano, who is from the Detroit suburb of Westland, and Sergei Zubov each added three assists.

“You try to keep your composure and stick with the game plan,” Modano said. “Don’t throw too many ‘hope for plays’ and get our ‘D’ and everybody stretched out.”

Henrik Zetterberg and Mathieu Schneider each had a goal and an assist and Jason Williams added a goal for Detroit. Pavel Datsyuk had three assists.

Lehtinen’s power-play goal 6:17 into the third period gave Dallas a 4-3 lead, when he backhanded in a loose puck from the bottom of the left circle for his 22nd goal. Kapanen scored 41 seconds later and Tjarnqvist’s goal came at 8:44.

“Our power play got us back into the game,” Dallas coach Dave Tippett said. “And we pushed in the third and got the ones we needed.”

Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood was replaced by Manny Legace after Tjarnqvist’s goal.

Zetterberg credited the Stars’ comeback to their goaltender change of replacing Marty Turco with Johan Hedberg early in the second period, when it was 3-0.

“They switched goalies and Hedberg came in and played really good,” Zetterberg said. “We had some good chances and he made the saves.”

Turco was pulled in favor of Hedberg after Williams’ goal. It was the second straight game that Dallas has won after Turco was pulled after giving up three goals and Hedberg came in.

“I felt pretty good,” Hedberg said. “Once you get in the playing mode, it’s easier. The guys really stepped up from the moment I came in.”

Turco is 0-5-5 against the Red Wings in his career.

Blue Jackets 5, Coyotes 2: At Glendale, Ariz., Bryan Berard scored three power-play goals for his first career hat trick, Sergei Fedorov added four assists and Columbus beat Phoenix to snap a three-game losing streak.

Rick Nash had a goal and an assist and Rostislav Klesla also scored to help the Blue Jackets win for the first time in regulation in 10 trips to Phoenix (1-6-3). Ladislav Nagy and Shane Doan scored for Phoenix. The Coyotes have lost three straight and eight of their past 12.

Predators 5, Blackhawks 1: At Chicago, Yanic Perreault had two goals and Steve Sullivan scored on a third-period penalty shot to help Nashville hand the Blackhawks their 10th straight loss.

The Blackhawks’ losing streak is their longest since a team-record 12-game slide at the end of the 1950-51 season. Chicago’s last win was Dec. 16 against St. Louis.

Jerred Smithson and Adam Hall also scored for the Predators, who won for only the second time in their past seven games.

Panthers 4, Capitals 3 (SO): At Washington, Roberto Luongo made two shootout saves, Nathan Horton and Joe Nieuwendyk scored shootout goals and Florida beat the Capitals.

Olli Jokinen scored twice in regulation and Sean Hill added a goal for the Panthers, who ended a season-long five-game road trip with a 2-2-1 record. Horton and Nieuwendyk added two assists apiece.

Dainius Zubrus had two goals and Jamie Heward also scored for Washington. Alex Ovechkin had two assists.
