It’s Showtime at Northern Quest Casino.

The Airway Heights casino will host its first nationally televised professional boxing card of 2006 on Feb. 3, when it presents a card to be carried live by premium cable channel Showtime.

The event is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and advance tickets are available through the casino.

Headlining the card will be Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell, the No. 2-ranked super welterweight (154 pounds) by the North American Boxing Federation, who takes on Eric “Murder” Mathews, ranked No. 10 by the NABF as a super middleweight (168 pounds), in the main event.

The left-handed Powell, 26, undefeated at 18-0 with 11 knockouts, moves up one weight class while Mathews, 36, (18-4-1 with nine knockouts) drops down for the middleweight (160-pound) bout.

The co-feature bout will feature 2004 Olympian Andre Berto, 22, who is undefeated since turning professional, winning seven of his nine bouts by knockout.

Berto turned pro Dec. 4, 2004, posting an impressive victory over Michael Robinson on an HBO boxing card.

Missildine service set

The memorial service for Harry Missildine will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Best Western University Inn in Moscow. It will be open to the public.

Missildine, the former sports editor of The Spokesman-Review and member of both the Inland Northwest and State of Washington sports halls of fame, died on Dec. 23. He was 85.

Oswald dedication today

The Cheney School board will dedicate the high school’s football field to longtime coach Tom Oswald today.

The ceremony, which will occur prior to the Cheney-Shadle Park wrestling match, will take place in the school’s gym, starting at 7 p.m.

Oswald had a 167-90-7 record, including two trips to the state finals.

He spent 25 years as Cheney’s head coach, retiring after the 2002 season.

WCC coaches tab Waves

West Coast Conference coaches selected two-time defending champion Pepperdine as the favorite in their preseason baseball poll.

The Waves received six first-place votes and 48 points. San Diego, the second selection, picked up the other two first-place votes and 42 points.

Gonzaga received 26 votes and was predicted for fifth place.
