Americans shut down Spokane
KENNEWICK – Three was the not-so-lucky number for the Spokane Chiefs on Friday the 13th.
The Tri-City Americans scored three power-play goals in the second period en route to a 3-0 Western Hockey League win that extended Spokane’s winless streak to three.
Americans captain Logan Stephenson assisted on all three goals and 16-year-old rookie goalie Chet Pickard posted his first career WHL shutout while stopping 23 shots.
At the other end of the ice, recently acquired Kevin Armstrong made his debut in goal for Spokane and faced just 20 shots. Two penalties gave Tri-City a 5-on-3 advantage that it converted for the first goal at the 6:17 mark of the second period.
The Americans would score another goal on the ensuing man-advantage, just 1:11 later. They closed out the scoring at the 14:36 mark of the period.
The win was a big one in the standings for Tri-City, which vaulted over Spokane and put the Chiefs into a last-place tie with Seattle in the U.S. Division. The Chiefs (17-21-4-0, 38 points) will try to even the score when they host the Americans (17-17-3-2, 39) tonight in the Arena.
