Loggers nip Whitworth in NWC

Ryan DeLong hit a free throw with 30 seconds left to give seventh-ranked Puget Sound a 106-105 victory over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference game at Tacoma.

Taylor Marsh hit 7 of 13 3-point attempts for the Loggers (11-2, 5-0), and Zack McVey had 23 points and nine rebounds. Chase Curtiss added 22 points for UPS, which shot 13 of 33 from behind the arc.

James Jones scored a game-high 30 off the bench for the Pirates (9-5, 3-2), who led by five points with just less than 2 minutes remaining. Lance Pecht added 24 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Jon Young shot 4 of 5 from 3-point range and scored 20.

Whitworth shot 61 percent in the game, including 76 percent in the second half. UPS shot 54 percent.

Women’s basketball

Sarah Carnahan scored 15 points as Puget Sound (11-3, 3-2) defeated Whitworth 68-53 in a Northwest Conference game at Tacoma.

Laura Hirsh added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Loggers, who forced 20 Pirates turnovers and shot 40 percent from the field.

Emily Hendrickson (Freeman High) had 14 points and six rebounds for Whitworth (8-5, 2-3), which had only three assists. The Pirates also had their five-game win streak snapped.
