Plenty of puppies at SCRAPS

The Spokesman-Review

If you’ve been thinking about adopting a puppy in Spokane County, now’s a good time. The animal shelter has about two dozen available right now.

“For January, usually we have almost no young dogs,” said Nancy Hill of Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service.

But for some reason, the shelter has been taking an unseasonably large number of puppies into its already limited space.

The puppy surplus follows a record-breaking year at the shelter, which housed more than 7,300 animals over the course of 2005.

“People have to take responsibility for their animals and spay (or) neuter them,” Hill said.

The surgery is included in the $75.01 cost of adopting a dog, which also covers the license, vaccinations and microchip.

For more information, call 477-2532 or visit the puppies at SCRAPS at 2125 N. Flora Road. The shelter is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. today but will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
