All-Academic

Forty-six Eastern Washington University athletes, including several from the local area, were chosen to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the fall quarter. Here are the local honorees:

Football: Joey Cwik (Mead), sr., biology; Nick Denbeigh, (Lewis and Clark), jr., communication studies; Tom McAndrews, (Mead), so., finance; Craig Sigler (Coeur d’Alene), sr., reading; Lars Slind (Mead), sr., international affairs; Marcus Walker (Pullman), fr., government.

Volleyball: Lizzy Mellor (Colfax), sr., graphic communications.

Men’s cross country: Caleb Jahay (North Central), fr., exploratory.

Women’s cross country: Nicolle Clutter (NIC), jr., special ed. and elementary ed.

Soccer: Tiera Como, (East Valley), jr., mathematics education; Abby Jensen, (Sandpoint), fr., criminal justice; Jennie Summers, (Central Valley), sr., nursing.

Bowling

Todd Benner defeated Jared Descoteaux 244-226 in the championship match to win last Sunday’s Junior Bowling Tour at Valley Bowl.

Descoteaux averaged 247 for the first four games but ended up in third place heading into the roll-offs. He defeated Nick Schmehl to qualify for the title match.

Descoteaux (279) and Lacey Kerr (235) had high games.

The next JBT event is Feb. 12 at North Bowl.

Fishing

Marc Lippencott of Spokane finished seventh overall at the three-day Bass Federation Championship that concluded Friday on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla. The top finisher was Anre’ De Villiers of South Africa, whose five-fish total came to 36 pounds, 12 ounces. Lippencott’s total was 25-3.

Football

Award winners announced at Eastern Washington’s banquet Saturday night were:

Offensive player of the year, Erik Meyer; defensive player of the year, Joey Cwik; special teams player of the year, Adam Macomber; captains, Meyer and Cwik; Pat Roberts Memorial Award, most inspirational, Jake Young; scout team offensive player of the year, Tony Davis; scout team defensive player of the year, Makai Borden.

Hockey

Spokane Women’s Hockey will host its Fifth Annual Spirit of America women’s tournament at Eagles-A-Rena Saturday through next Sunday. Fourteen teams from Washington, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia will take part in three divisions of play, including four squads from Spokane.

Running

Spokane’s Meredith Leva placed first in the 18-24 women’s age division during last Sunday’s Walt Disney World Marathon at Kissimmee, Fla.

Leva, 19, a Ferris High graduate, finished the 26-mile, 385-yard course in 3 hours, 18 minutes, 35 seconds.

Spokane’s Gretchen Rose Wolf, 32, placed 16th in the women’s 30-34 division in 3:39.35.

Soccer

Washington State University earned a 2004-05 NSCAA/Adidas Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award. The Cougars carried a 3.51 team grade point average during the 2004-05 academic year to earn the NSCAA/Adidas award. The mark ranked WSU among the top-20 schools nationally and was the highest GPA of the Pacific-10 Conference.

Tennis

Washington State University’s Ekaterina Burduli was ranked 59th and Marjolein van de Ven earned 81st nationally by Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITA ranks the top 100 women singles players and the top 50 doubles pairs from their play in the fall.
