Mitchell, Faurholt carry Vandals to win

Leilani Mitchell scored a game-high 19 points and Emily Faurholt added 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Idaho Vandals to a 54-51 victory over the Utah State Aggies in Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball play on Saturday at the Cowan Spectrum in Moscow.

The Vandals (7-8, 3-1) made up for shooting just 31 percent (17 of 55) from the field on the night by forcing 20 turnovers, while committing just eight.

Ali Marchant led the Aggies (1-13, 0-4) with 10 points. Utah State outrebounded Idaho 42-30.

•Julie Page tallied 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals to propel the Eastern Washington Eagles (7-7) to a 78-76 victory over the Portland State Vikings (6-8) in a Big Sky Conference opener in Cheney.

Joanna Chadd added 12 points and Brittney Osborn and Jamie Chicane each scored 10 for the Eagles, who shot 52 percent from the floor for the game.

Eastern dominated the boards by a 36-26 margin and had a 46-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Kelsey Kahle scored a game-high 24 to pace the Vikings.

•Noelle Quinn had game highs of 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the UCLA Bruins (10-7, 5-3) to a 73-63 victory over the Washington State Cougars (6-10, 0-7) in Pac-10 play in Pullman.

Freshman Amanda Durocher topped the Cougars with a season-high 20 points. Kate Benz and Crystal Blue each scored 10 for WSU, which played without injured starters Charmaine Jones and Adriane Ferguson.

The Cougars have lost nine straight games overall, and 11 straight conference games. The Bruins beat WSU for the 10th straight time.

Benz grabbed nine rebounds and moved into 10th place all-time on the school’s rebounding list with 602.

•Camille LeNoir tossed in 14 of her 18 points in the second half to guide the Southern Cal Trojans (12-5, 6-2) to a 64-61 victory over the Washington Huskies (12-4, 5-2) in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

The loss snapped Washington’s 12-game home winning streak.

Emily Florence paced the Huskies with 13 points and seven rebounds.

UW senior guard Kayla Burt did not suit up because of concerns over her heart. Burt, who collapsed three years ago, plays with a defibrillator implanted in her chest. During Thursday’s win over UCLA, the device activated. She was admitted overnight to the UW Medical Center for observation and her status for the rest of the season is uncertain.

•The Loyola Marymount Lions (10-7, 4-0) jumped out to a 17-3 lead and were never threatened en route to a 75-48 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (7-12, 2-2) in West Coast Conference play in Los Angeles.

Rachael Ziemann came off the bench and led all scorers with 15 points for LMU. Jenni Smith scored 13 and Ashlee Dunlap totaled nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Lions.

Reserve Jami Bjorklund scored 12 points to lead the Bulldogs. Katy Ridenhour pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

•Nikki Johnson had a double-double – 18 points, 13 rebounds – and the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (13-1, 6-0) rolled to a 69-45 victory over the cold-shooting Whitworth Pirates (8-6, 2-4) in Northwest Conference action in Tacoma.

Emily Hendrickson topped Whitworth with 12 points, while Danielle Wegman grabbed a team-high six rebounds. The Pirates shot just 18 percent (6 of 33) in the first half and 22 percent for the game (14 of 64).

Mallory Mann added 14 points and a game-high six assists for the Lutes, who won their 11th straight game.

•Caitlin Chourchaine tossed in a game-high 26 points and Paige McGowan and Sara Dennehy both finished with double-doubles as the North Idaho Cardinals (12-5, 5-1) rolled to an 85-69 victory over the visiting Dixie State Rebels (10-8, 4-2) in Scenic West Athletic Conference action.

McGowan finished with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Dennehy closed with 15 points and 10 boards.
