Vanaman notches pin in NIC victory

Joe Vanaman pinned Reggie Torres in 2 minutes, 29 seconds in the 149-pound weight class to spark the North Idaho Cardinals to a 28-10 wrestling victory over the Pacific Boxers in Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

NIC 125-pounder Jeff Hedges earned a major decision with an 11-3 win over Aaron Fernandez.

Jack Carney (157), Josh Erickson (165), Josh Edmondson (184) and Jake Kallestad (197) all won by decision for the Cardinals. NIC heavyweight Robby Shaw won by forfeit.

Track and field

Eastern Washington fared well at the 19th annual Jerry Martin Invitational meet at the Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney.

Seven EWU athletes met the qualifying standards in nine events for the Big Sky Conference indoor championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 24-25.

Freshman Sara Frey paced the Eagles women by winning the 500-meter run in 1 minute, 19.45 seconds and the 55-meter dash in 7.30 seconds.

The other women’s qualifiers were Sara Fouts, Sarah Hegna and Teanna Meinhold.

Fouts won the high jump when she cleared 5 feet, 4 1/4 inches.

Hegna cleared 11-11 3/4 to finish first in the pole vault, while Meinhold won the triple jump with a leap of 37-0 1/4 .

The Eagles men had three qualify for the conference indoor meet.

Mike Uhlenkoot qualified in the pole vault, clearing 15-5 en route to a second-place finish in the event.

Billy Grubbs and Cameron Moore are also headed to Flagstaff. Grubbs finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 46-3 1/4 , while Moore placed fourth in the event with a distance of 45-2 1/4 .

Football

Miami fullback Quadtrine Hill and Tulane safety Tra Boger each scored two touchdowns to lead the East to a 41-3 victory over the West in the Las Vegas All-American Classic.

Five Big Sky players – EWU wide receiver Eric Kimble, Montana State offensive guard Jeff Bolton, Portland State running back Joe Rubin, and Weber State offensive tackle Paul McQuistan and linebacker Brady Fosmark – took part in the game.

Kimble returned a kickoff 15 yards. Rubin had three carries for minus-2 yards.
